OUR HISTORY

More Than 100 Years of Golfing Heritage

Golf on the Woorayl grounds dates back more than 100 years. Before the formation of the current club, the course was originally home to the former Leongatha Golf Club until 1961.

In April 1961, local golfer Jack Roughead brought together a passionate group of golfers determined to preserve golf at the original recreation reserve. From this meeting, Woorayl Golf Club was officially formed, with Basil Pugh becoming the club’s first president.

The land itself carries a rich local history. Originally surveyed in 1887, the course area was gradually developed through hard work and community support. During the early 1930s, local workers and volunteers cleared large areas of blackberries and native timber to help establish the fairways and playing areas still enjoyed today.

Over the decades, Woorayl Golf Club has grown into a respected community club known throughout Gippsland for its welcoming atmosphere and strong volunteer culture.
